today me and ashley headed out to le target to get her a gift for tonight's bunco game. well, the boy got cut off from the pacifier today so he was in a mood. he didn't want to play with his keys or anything else i handed him so i thought i should bust out the phone and pull up some little einsteins on the you tube. well, this was a great idea in theory, but he kept dropping it so ashley, super genius, had a fantastic idea.

she snapped my wallet (it is so fancy it holds my phone as well) around the bar on the shopping cart!

the kid was soooo happy for like, 4min. it was great. once again; ashley peterson: smartest woman that ever lived.

i was right, today was much better than yesterday (yesterday can die). how could it not be awesome with these two little kidlets to go shopping with?!:

they were pretty adorable to stare at while shopping and look how excited raegan is about her ramen. not many of you may know this but the crinkling sound the package makes keeps the little ones occupied for minutes on end.

oh my glory. if i was a drinking woman i would be bathing in jack daniels right now. it has been one of those days where it is just a sad downward spiral of horrible things happening. firstly lemme just tell you that this kid:

has been sicker than a dog for days. he has been snotty and coughing. it is ugly. there is more baby tylenol in this kid's system than i would like to admit (within the legal limit of course, no need to call cps). on top of the sick factor the tax guy called yesterday and was all, "hey want me to do your taxes?!" and i was all, "for real, i have a stack of paperwork with your name on it jared." (his name was jared). so today me and the crawling flu went to visit jared and get us some refunds. however, when we got there jared was not around and some old lady was in his place. this poor receptionist (i call her that because there is no way she has any sort of accounting degree) got stuck on the fact that we have an HSA (health savings account) and could not for the life of her find the form for that. she did however find an hour of my life and take it as her own. all of this occurred whilst the boy was screaming to go home, take a nap, have food (who freaking knows!?). it was the worst hour anyone has ever had in the history of hours. i am going to save you from the rest of the day because it gets personal and even sadder (insert pity from friends/readers-"ah, thanks guys. you are the best."). i am shooting for a great day tomorrow. it will start our with an exciting grocery date at 8:30am (its really the best time to go shopping, trust me) and move into an afternoon yogurt date. wish me luck.

so, sometimes the cool girls call me and invite me to things. in this story the party in mention is the monthly bunco gathering. well, to play the game you either donate $10 or buy a gift depending on whatever the host is feeling like that month. lisa decided everyone should buy a $10 prize and bring it. also like a good friend, lisa reminded me this morning that i had still not purchased a prize and took me out to do so. therefore; off to the ross we went. whist hunting amongst the many treasures this store has to offer i stumbled upon this little gem:

its a statue of a dog dressed up in renaissance clothing!!! best prize ever right?! well, lisa did not think so. she vetoed this one and i ended up buying something else. if you want this beautiful piece of artwork and have a spare $1.99 (yeah, its a bargain too) head on down to the idaho falls ross and it can be yours. shout out to my new friend jessica who works at the ross (she is the one holding up her name tag so you know who she is).

gideon used to bury his bones in the back yard next to the fence (there was a wire running across the slats connected to olive's collar to keep her from going all houdini on us so, she could never dig them up). however, this past summer there was a lawn mower accident and the wire was severed by the mower blades. ever since gid has been having to get a little more creative with his hiding spots. last week in was amongst the shoes in my closet. i went in my room only to notice that my shoes were no longer separated by shoe type and color coordinated within those categories (for real, that story is for another day). i immediately went downstairs to blame davis for this but he denied any wrongdoing. then i thought maybe it was one of henry's friends that was over earlier in the day so i just went to cleaning up the mess and reorganizing the shoes. thats when i saw gid's bone in the back corner of the closet. i really should have taken a picture but i was pretty much done with putting my shoes back and who wants pictorial proof of their neurosis? (not this kid-points to self). today while i was sitting on the couch he hopped up and shoved his bone betwixt the cushions in the couch. and then this adorableness happened:

many of you may well know of henry's great love of little einsteins. i hate to say it but i let him watch it quite frequently. lately i have noticed when annie (pictured below) comes on the screen he seems to get extra excited jumping and smiling more than usual. yesterday however i put two and two together. who does annie remind me of i thought?...

henry's girlfriend natalie barnwell from montana and annie are like twins (if cartoons could be people or people could be cartoons). the pigtails, the bright blue eyes and cute grins. how did i not see it sooner? is this why he wants to watch the show all the time? he misses his blond bombshell? makes me think a bozeman road trip should be in the near future.

one thing that i have always enjoyed about birthdays is that people often forget about them. now, this may seem like a strange comment coming from someone who is obsessed with parties so let me explain. when someone forgets your birthday the present they intended to buy/send you will still come, but it will come late. but this means that your birthday will last all. month. long! par example:

here is henry's new hat from natalie barnwell and family that came in the mail a little over a week after his birthday. the hat (and accompanying sweater-not pictured) made his birthday more than two weeks. he looks pretty gangsta if you ask me.

today my pretty friend shiloh came to visit from salt lake city. she is a fly by the seat of her pants sort of gal in that we talked about the idea of her visiting a few days ago and voila, she came in this afternoon.

shiloh asked about the town and what it had to offer in the way of thrift stores. i mentioned that the calvary church here just opened a thrift store and it was super awesome. with that we hit it up. i was thinking about stuffing some readers digest condensed books in my purse when i saw the sign in the picture above posted in the bathroom. if you are wondering if i put the books in my purse the answer is no, and i took the juice glasses out too.

shiloh had an overwhelming urge to watch look who's talking so we went to hastings and picked up the double feature version with look who's talking too included. all for $9.99 minus tax. thats a bargain.

today henry had a hot lunch date with sexy lexie. however, sexy lexie wanted to take a nap so it turned into more of a play date with her older brother dallin.

it was pretty fun watching these two guys interact. he was pretty good at making henry laugh.

now the reason dallin was even riding in the cart was due to a bribe by his mother. she told him if he stayed in the cart he would receive a pretzel at the end of the excursion. however, he fell asleep while we were in line getting it.

i don't know if you can tell but he had some adorable marks on his face from laying down in the cart to take a quick siesta.

today whilst at the local walmart i ran into this lovely lady:

she is one of my bestest of friends so instead of continuing out the door (which is where i was headed when i encountered her presence), i followed her around whilst she shopped (two "whilst's" in one post?! you wanna fight about it?). good thing too because as some of you know i worked at the walmart for 2 months back in the day and this lady needed some help navigating the store (did you know scales are located in the hardware section? they are). well, she was looking for one and i knew where it was. after she found the one she wanted we wandered the store a bit more and then checked out. while in line lisa grabbed an impulse snickers (you know, the overpriced ones they keep near the checkout line). i couldn't help but take a picture for irony's sake as it is something i would do. like going to the grocery store for fruits and veggies to juice and then stopping on the way home at mcdonald's for fries.
i. love. this. woman.

later in the evening when davis came home from work he explained to me that he had a hard day and need to hit up the texas roadhouse for some din din. i could not change out of my pajamas fast enough (thats right i was in the pajamas this morning, took a shower and got into new clean pajamas, changed out of them into jeans for walmart (cause i am classy), then back into them when i got home, then back into the jeans for the roadhouse and now into p.j.s again for night time. pajamas: 4 people clothes: 2. did you get all that?). henry's biggest fan, jen, happened to be our waitress so while she was tying up our bill she stole the little fellow to show to her co-workers. i totally didn't mind as he is super handsome and was in a way good mood.

the davis men are a feisty bunch. lets start with davis. when he came home from lunch today henry and i were showing naps how it is done with a 4hr siesta. so, he was once again left to his own devices for lunch and noon-time entertainment. i found a page of today's wall street journal on the floor outside my bedroom when henry and i finally awoke. if you can't read the title of the article, its "meet the marriage killer." this is called passive aggression. well, maybe he meant for me to read the column on veggie burgers. no? i didn't think so either.

now, if you read yesterday's blog you know how henry found his cousin raegan's bink and gave it a trial run. the boy is not one to take the toys of others but when he found out raegan had being playing with his toys he got a little vengeful (as babies do). moving on to this afternoon. henry was watching an episode of small potatoes about emotions. he learned about sadness among other things.

"sad is how i felt when i found out raegan was playing with my toys..." henry expressed.

"i bet she felt bad when i sent her the photo text of me with her bink..." he told me.

"i should probably invite her over to watch this so she understands why i played with her bink..." i am so proud to have raised such an emotionally aware one year-old.

henry's cousin raegan left her pacifier at our house last night and late this afternoon it was discovered by his toys downstairs. given that all of his binks were on another floor he thought he should give hers a go.

it was a pretty busy day at the davis house. as i am sure all of you know the bachelor was on tonight. so i thought it was a good idea to have a party complete with italian sodas. i needed to head to the store and since henry looked like this:

i thought, hey, lets just head out now since sleeping is below reading "are you my mother" for the 20th time today on his priority list. so, off we went to the grocery store to pick up some fixins for girly drinks. then, on the way home this happened:

totally should have seen this one coming. but seriously, how adorable is it that he fell asleep with the receipt in his hands (he loves the crinkling sound paper makes).

fast forward to this evening. henry was sadly fast asleep by the time his cousin raegan came by to watch tons of ladies fight over the same man. i am sure, however, that he was dreaming about reading his book whilst she hit up the italian sodas.

sometimes when you turn your back on a canine they do bad things. olive is not a sometimes kind of puppy. she is a "leave me alone in a room and i will set it on fire" kinda girl. this morning i made davis a cup of coffee (as i was twice a barista and have mad skills). shortly there after he sauntered into the bathroom as most of use do early in the am (is this too much information? we all know it happens). seconds pass and davis returns only to find his precious mug has been drained of its sweet nectar. how you ask? have you not read the preceding paragraph? this kid did it:

davis got upset and put her in time out. he tends to overreact when his coffee is involved.

mia moved in the allotted 10% but for some reason henry was not taking the bait...

this went on for awhile so i gave him a receipt.

drunken naps

my dad finally left today (old people, they are such a burden) and so, during henry's nap time i passed out like a drunk relative on christmas eve after a pot full of hot buttered rums-in that i woke up in a pile of my own drool with an array of pillow/blanket creases on my face. the soft cries of my son coming from the baby monitor awoke me a good hour and a half after i laid down. as i was walking up the stairs to fetch my sweet boy i saw davis with this note in his hand:

he came home for lunch and sadly everyone was asleep. he had to make his own lunch! and use the stove all by himself! this has taught me not to fall asleep in the middle of the day.

my handsome son has lots to do throughout the day as he is a busy and in demand young man. while i was cleaning the bathroom today (and grandpa was conveniently sleeping) henry decided to do some interior decorating. he took all his toys off the first shelf of his diaper and put them on the floor. "its feng shui mom, you don't get it."

kids these days. i can see a lot of interior design in this kid's future.

today was henry's first birthday party and let me tell you it was bomb. all of henry's favorite lady babies were there.

here is the man of the hour surrounded by ladies, can you blame them?

here are some of my bestest of friends. as to not cause a quarrel i will not tell you which is my favorite, but just for a hint, she has at least one vowel in her name.

this is a pic of my nephew and charming neighbor who became fast friends when they learned of a mutual love of running around my house, hitting each other with balloons and wearing birthday hats improperly. henry was having a drink as the stress of the afternoon was a bit much at times.

"mom, i said red velvet not funfetti!" shouts henry.

"wait,...is that fire?'

the suze was all about double duty with her handmade headband and skull and crossbones birthday hat. "its all about accessorization." says the suze.

ally and raegan stopped by, but sadly with all the other lady babies hanging on henry there was little socialization betwixt the two.

henry's taste in woman ranges. par example: here he plays with sexy lexie (age 9 months). sexy lexie is a super fun girl and her crawling abilities are amazing. all these things put together make for one fun play date.

of course t. joined the party. and when the birthday boy wasn't looking he jumped right into henry's saucer.

"what? he wasn't going to eat it..." says grandpa as he eats henry's birthday cupcake (for real dad?).

with all the other babies around henry and elsie didn't have the chance to get into a fight! shameful really.

here henry shows his excitement for opening up presents. "yay..." he says with an "i'd rather be chewing on a ziploc bag" brow.

i am not sure what we were talking about in this picture but the fact that henry is mirroring me is adorable (also check out the suze in the background, she was in on it as well).

"oh, look at that wall mom!" says henry. this is the trick he plays when he wants to be done with sitting in his high chair. although sometimes it is "hey, is that a dog walking around the room?" or "holy crap mom, you can totally see through these windows!" he is a clever boy. in short having 12 kids and 16 adults in your front room is kinda crazy, but i think henry had fun even though i am positive he has no clue about what happened today.

naps and knife-fights

henry's room felt a little chilly during nap time today so i thought, "maybe if i move that whiny kid into a warmer room i can get to my white zin and soaps" (just kidding, i don't care for soaps). alas, as soon as the kid hit the grown-up pillow he was out like a handsome light.

side point: if you look really close to his left eye you can see the slice he got from a knife-fight yesterday (you should see the other baby). its not that i am not proud, but right before birthday party pictures?! come on kid.

this was me just over a year ago. i believe i was in about hour 10 of labor. i was getting a little stir crazy so davis suggested we take a stroll around the hospital (good thing i brought my stylish pink socks-they came with my snuggie, i don't know why i didn't bring that. i guess i was all, "a baby is coming out of me, lets hurry to the hospital before he falls out. if i was smart i would have just given birth in the car and then checked us both into the hospital so i would have avoided the outrageous fees that it costs to have a child these days). what was i talking about? oh, the late-night hospital strolling. it was 11 jan so we were trying to get that kid out so he could have the 11111 birthday that was the craze at the moment (for real; 7 ladies got induced that day!). henry is a man who does things in his own time though. so, although i went into labor around 2 or 3pm on tuesday, he didn't make his arrival until 4:05pm the next day. it was totally worth the wait though cause as you can tell by reading my blog, henry is super fun and handsome and i love him to pieces. happy b-day buddy.

surprise, you are having a baby!

the other day i got an email about a surprise double baby shower. now, i am not bffs with either of the girls, but me likey the parties and me double likey the surprises (also how fun would it be if one of them went into labor because they were so super-surprised!? spoiler: didn't happen). anyhoo, j.p and i loaded up on the baby presents at the target yesterday and this evening we car pooled ourselves over to le church and partied till 8:30!

here is one of elise's kids (who can tell them apart am i right?) taking down a fun-sized pixie stick. he is going to be a blast at 3am.

we played the "guess how big the pregnant lady is" game with toilet paper and mia put some up her sweater! already stuffing at 14months!? they grow up so fast.

here is krystal opening up not the best gift (it was not mine-mine was a pink velour sweatsuit. for real real, invite me to your parties, i give awesome gifts).

mia got bored during present opening time so she worked the static with her beautiful brown locks.

now, i forgot to mention this was technically a young woman's activity turned double baby shower. so, with that in mind i am not a young woman's leader. therefore i was not invited into the first few pictures (the ones that will be on facebook). i thought it would be funny to take a picture of all the ladies that were also not invited to be in the picture. yay for primary teachers!

els and henry have been bffs now for almost a year now and i like to chronicle their quarrels because it is amusing, but there have been tons o' happy times. so many that henry put together a few pictures for elsie's big first b-day. after carefully editing and sending them to be printed off, he found the perfect frame this morning and put it all together. now, henry is no slacker mind you; he put a reminder on my phone for when to send out the pictures and when to drive him to pick them up (her actual b-day was almost two weeks ago). the tardiness of this gift is entirely on my shoulders as henry was constantly nagging me to take him to retrieve the photos. he went so far as to learn how to crawl as he thought he would be able to make it to the corner before getting tired or distracted (have i told you how this kid loves him a ziploc bag?). but alas, i was too absorbed in 1,000 ways to die (have you seen this show?!-amazeballs) and couldn't peel myself off the couch.

well, its done now and all henry has to do is successfully wrap it without eating the paper (note: favorite things henry puts in his mouth: #1 ziploc bag #2 paper #3 food sometimes).

anyone remember when this happened? i do. every time i walked downstairs there was a sweet constant reminder of the fun little flood that occurred just a few short months after we put in the new flooring. the first thing i saw was an awesome oasis floor with chipped paint and no wood. given that henry is now on the move (he totally crawled to his favorite toy this morning (its a ziploc bag-for real, this kid is so easy to please)), i thought it would be nice to cover the cement as a fall onto the wood (pergo to be exact, what do you think i am made of dollars?!-that i am not) would be better than a slip on the cement. also henry's face is so cute now that the eczema is gone he will probably be a meal ticket in the near future and we don't want to bang up the money-maker now do we? no. back to the floor. i was whining to my friend lisa about my ugly basement at a church function when she said, "oh, jeff (her husband) can do that." oh. my. goodness. i almost peed myself. within half hours jeff and lisa were in my basement surveying the damage and jeff agreed that yes, he could indeed put the floor back together! yay. in short, this morning jeff came over at 10am and he and davis started to put the floor in! about an hour later my brother-in-law and father-in-law joined the party! they worked super hard all day and it is practically done. lookie here:

oh that, thats just my new floor... no big deal.

and this? well... thats a small mess but it will be glorious soon enough. then it will once again resume its work as the guest bedroom. until then i am going to risky business my trash all over the part that is finished.

it was a pretty slow day at the davis house today. we read some books, took some naps, ate some pureed corn (that was mostly henry, but i did taste it and feel the sharp pain of jealously). given that nothing was really accomplished; no pictures were taken. so here is a lovely snapshot from the recent girl's trip to utah. ain't this a good-lookin' bunch?

a new year is upon us and i feel like everyone around me is setting out on their new year's resolutions with the fervor of a hoarder on a garage sale.

even t. busted out the ab roller and started to work off the christmas cookies he has been storing in his gut.

watching him do push-ups with dumbbells got me thinking, "should i have a new year's resolution as well? i mean, if a stuffed raccoon i enjoy personifying wants one, shouldn't i desire the same for myself?"

when t. took to the thighmaster my laziness was apparent. as i sat on the couch and watched my crappy gossip news as t. worked on his fitness i decided it was time for brownies. in short, my resolution is to be a better housewife and to do that i will cook more brownies for my husband (and eat the raw batter myself). yay for 2012!

since henry's eczema has been clearing up, he has found there are a ton of other things for him to do outside of scratching. some things include: grabbing at random stuff on tables, pulling himself up and learning how to type on his dad's keyboard. he was having a grand old time this morning helping davis play video games when he saw a coffee cup he wanted. now, as grown-ups we tend to use the handle the nice people at the ceramic company have applied to the mug to pick it up. a baby however sees a wide open hole at the top and thinks, "if i put my hand in here, i can make the cup go in my lap so i can play with whats inside!" genius. henry did just that and everything that was once inside the mug went all over davis's keyboard. we did a quick clean up and i assumed everything would soon be fine as i excused myself for a nap. i should have known the extent of the damage when i came downstairs to my husband watching this:

yep, those are the kardashians. not only was he watching an episode kourtney and kim take new york, but he recalled to me what irritated him about the previous episodes using phrases like, "kourtney always does this!" does she? after we continued in the marathon for another hour or so davis decided to head out and hit up the best buy to look at keyboard options.

this is what he came back with (points to above picture). a solar powered keyboard and some sort of nerd-related left handed ergonomic keyboard (located under left hand).

the irony of the solar powered keyboard is that his computer is kept in the basement.

"more intense!" the moral of this story is that if you want a new and shiny toy just let your kid break what it is you want to replace.

this morning henry slept in till 9:00am (probably cause he was up partying so late last night-this kid can totally drink you under the table). so, after breakfast and a quick episode of little einsteins it was time to start getting ready for church. this meant i needed davis to watch the boy while i hopped in the shower. as you can see by this picture he did just that.

good thing henry had a book to keep him entertained. by the time i was done getting ready he could say star in three different languages!

there was a fun new years celebration at grandma and grandpa davis's house this evening. we rang it in old people style at 6:00pm as there were lots o' babies and they hit the sack early.

henry was super-impressed by grandma's fancy pacifier. his new year's resolution is to get more girlfriends and to drive me less insane during people-food eating time (i fully support both of these).

so henry had his first trip to the dermatologist today and i would say that it seemed successful and left me hopeful for his poor sad skin. he got two kinds of oral meds; one for the itchy and one to suppress the eczema. he also got two kinds of oils; one for the scalp and one for his ripped abs and biceps; read: body (this one is so fancy that they have to fly it in from salt lake city!).

also i promised you un-edited pics of the baby boy so here they is:

he has got sadness everywhere:( here are some decent pictures of his face, but it is also all over his scalp, back and ankles with little patches all over his body. how miserable would this be?

but for real, this kid is such a trooper about the whole thing. he rarely whines about it and he lets us put lotion on him all day every day. best baby ever (points to picture of henry).

seriously kid? i am not meaning to make light of mental disorders, but bipolar does run in the family. i popped fussy mcihatefooderstein (there is also some jewish and irish in the pot) in his high chair, which as of the past week has brought on tears-just sitting in the chair, for reals. expecting a replay of yesterday's multiple hour battle i prepared myself for having to shower for a second time and tried to harden myself to henry's insults as i fed him (he is tiny, but he can be so cruel). lo and behold the kid not only ate the food (this he has never really had a problem with-its getting it into his mouth that has been the problem) but his handsome little lips parted like the red sea when the spoon neared them!

"mom, this is so easy, i don't know why you cried all day yesterday thinking you were a failure of a parent..." said henry.

he is practically a pro at the spoon eating. however, i am not going to count my chickens quite yet as he might slip back into old habits tomorrow. at least i have evidence that at one time he did eat off of a spoon. maybe if i play the video back to him he will remember how easy it is to eat like a grown-up. stay tuned for tomorrow's post where henry takes his first trip to the dermatologist! my little eczema-ridden boy will be unphotoshopped!

"who me?" he asks with his furrowed brow.

yeah you kid. this morning was the longest of all our fights. 3 hours. for real friends. i tried to feed him i swearsies. i snuck the spoon in his mouth a few times when he was laughing or crying (amazing mother-points to self) then put him in his crib sans toys for 5ish min after a few attempts. lather, rinse repeat. 3. hours.

"but mom, all you need to do is put the food in the blender with some formula, throw it in a bottle and call it a day!" he says.

"no!" i reply. "you will not be drinking all of your nutrients. all of your girlfriends eat food." i added

nothing, i tell you, will persuade this boy to eat food. and any kind of food at that. baby food, crackers, bread, fruit, puffs. not. a. thing. i have been trying to tell him of the goodness of birthday cake that awaits him but with no success. the big day is in 2 weeks and the outlook of cakegate 2012 is bleak. who wants to come over and feed this kid?

today whilst i prepared my face and hair for the viewing of others i plopped the boy on the floor in the hallway so i could keep a eye on him. now, given that he is my child he is slightly lazy and doesn't feel the need to crawl. he does however know how to scoot around enough to get into trouble-the reason i put him in the hallway is because when i went to check on him in his room he had the cord to the baby monitor in his mouth (i am a good mother i swear). as i am a super-good wife the house is quite spotless at the moment so there was not much to play with in the hallway. henry however found himself a toy in a carpeted abyss.

"something shiny!" exclaims henry.

"it feels like tub time in here..."

the davis girls annual trip was this past weekend and boy did we have fun. mama davis, jess, rae and i headed down to the slc via suv and met up with amanda who flew in from tennessee (via plane). wilst awaiting her flight arrival jess and i took to one of the shops the airport had to offer...

something we found amusing was the array of keychains they had to offer. here jess and i display our two favs; a beer stein and the slc temple (jess is not displaying it well, but it is there). these are the things salt lake is known best for...right? well, at least the beer.

after we found out amanda's flight was going to be super late we decided on some zupas (best food ever). here is a picture of my tastypants turkey and artichoke sandwich and gumbo.

when we arrived at the clark hotel (jessica's parent's house) i was more than excited to find that justin bieber was also staying there! (don't get jealous husband, i am using him for my climb to the top).

saturday morning we went off to temple square to see the sights. jess was super excited (she really was, this was a surprise picture).

this is the awesome tree in the joseph smith hotel (i think-i was only kinda paying attention to where we were).

these little bubbles had lights in them (it probably looks cool all lit up but it was so stinkin cold by the end of the night we just took a quick jaunt around the grounds-more on that later).

now not many of you know this, but temple square is a pretty sweet arena for freestyle walking. you get some funny looks, but it is totally worth it.

in one of the visitor's centers there were some computers set up for family search. i pretty much sat in front of them to take a load off for a few minutes but while i was there i decided to type in my great grandpa's name to see what would come up. low and behold there he be! with his wifey and 3 kids! thanks to whomever is doing my genealogy for me.

this is probably the best picture i took up to this point.

after the visitor's center we hit up some shopping. here rae displays what can only be stakes for killing vampires.

this evening the cool kids weren't hanging out at home with their new black friday gadgets,

they were partying together in their thrift store best whilst playing backgammon.

the davis clan put together a swinging 20s themed party and if i do say so myself it was the bee's knees. there was texas hold'um, peanut brittle and some on the level hooch (soda mostly). also we had to use a password to get in (it was totally legit). we partied till 9:00! (yeah, we all have kids so this seemed super late).

on a final note i would like to point out my personal shopping talents. i picked out every item of davis's outfit without him there and look how handsome he is.

for those of you that don't love me and therefore didn't see me on saturday; davis threw me a super-surprise party! let me tell you, i am quite a snoopy girl and very hard to catch off guard. however, the guy done good. i did however figure out what my gift was only minutes before he gave it to me. davis told me that we were headed out to eat with some fam so we hopped in the volvo and headed over to my in-laws to drop off the boy. since i am never in the passengers seat of my car i get a little anxious and feel the need to clean when i am there. for some reason i thought it was a good idea to clean out my glove compartment. i changed the cd that was playing and started looking for trash. i am quite the neat-freak when it comes to my car so finding a stray piece of paperwork was quite disturbing. "i don't maintain my car outside of gas, what could this giant receipt be for" i asked myself. just when i read what it was davis snatched it out of my hand. "i can never surprise you!" true that davis, sorry. what was the gift you ask? a new phone! yay! i didn't even know i wanted one until i started playing with it and found out how much cooler it was than the one that i had was. i downloaded this fancy app called instagram (everyone under the age of 30 already knows what this is, so the explanation of it will be solely for my dad). this fantastic app makes pictures look old and awesome. regarder ici:

ashley and i went to the target earlier today and whilst looking for some shampoo

i stumbled on this little gem:

for reals, that totally says; "placenta." ew. it also has vitamin e and panthenol! i really wanted to buy it (a bargain at under $3!) but i could not bring myself to carry the bottle to the checkout counter and face the possibility of running into someone i knew. "oh this, you don't just fry up and eat your afterbirth anymore, you also rub it in your hair."

later in the day davis, the boy and i hit up the five guys (do you guys know the glory of their burgers? heaven on a bun i tell you). davis used to be a professional male model and sometimes it just comes out when i turn a camera on him (note above: the man knows how to find his light). on a side point i would like to reiterate how much more stylish henry is than davis and i combined. look at him sporting a harley davidson button-up and beanie. another side point: looks like the kid doesn't have a right hand am i right?-cause henry isn't.

i think it is always good to start out a post with a sweet picture of the boy lookin' like he's bout to cut a B. this was taken this morning at the mcdonalds playplace-its the happiest place on earth right? seriously he is a really happy boy i don't know where he gets this face from, but i do have to say that it is way amusing (also funny-this totally looks like a facebook pic where henry is taking a shot of himself).

davis and i took the boy trick-or-treating on the davis compound tonight and taught the kid how fun it is to get candy for free.

also it is important to note if you go to the houses of family members the amount of candy you will receive usually increases tenfold. all you have to do is distract them with conversation and continue to hold out your basket. fantastic.

here is cousin ally and her lovely raegan. raegan was sadly sleeping through her first halloween and i am sad to say probably learned little to nothing about how a fun-sized chocolate bar is worth like, 20 starbursts in trade. also i was a zombie.

trunk-or-treated

tonight was the annual trunk or treat at the church. sadly because we were hanging out too long in the rexburg, henry missed out on the candy portion of the evening (he was pretty broken up about it, but he will get by). there was also a chili cook-off. my plan was to hit up the texas roadhouse and pass off their chili as my own (hey there is nothing in the rule book about using a popular food chain's chili as yours in competition, in fact there is no rule book). however again, we were running late and didn't have time for my tricksy ways...le sigh.

here is lisa and little lexie (one of the many ladies vying for henry's heart). she did not win the chili cook-off and she would want me to tell you. so there it is. she did however take home a prize for someone that left early (congrats!).

this little guy was about the scariest monster in the whole place. in fact, he was the only monster.

he was a tad worn out after a sleepover at the cousin's house last night, hence the sleepy face.

he kinda had enough at this point.

amber and i were driving her sweet van down 1st street today when we saw this awesome love seat (pictured below) in front of the calvary thrift store. those that of you that have visited my humble abode know how vast and empty my front room is. now, davis and i spend little to no time in this room so there is no real "need" per say for furniture in this room as the t.v. (read: fun) is downstairs. however, when people come over for the first time they tend to ask if we just moved in (we did not). so amber and i flipped a wicked U, picked up this bad boy and tossed it in the back of her swaggin wagon.

(a few notes: amber and i don't wear make up on wednesdays, please don't be afraid. secondly the post-it that are featured in these pictures say, "free, be blessed" (oh, i am thanks to your couch). lastly i totally went to the winco in this outfit this morning. did you notice i am wearing a child-sized snuggie?).

ashley and i hit up the micky d's for a fun-filled friday afternoon date and this little girl was more charming than i have ever seen her.

now theres a cute kid enjoying his mcdonalds bottle!

back to elsie. as els is a bit young for her own big mac, ashley brought her puffs (for the non-infant/toddler watchers these are cereal-sized dissolvable snacks). not only was she shoving her entire hand in her mouth (a rookie infant move), she also tried to eat them off the table.

it got really cute when she rubbed her sore teething gums on the table. so charming.

this poor mouth-breather has had a nasty case of the allergies these past few days so he has been sleeping like it is going out of style.

saturday night i had a pumpkin decorating party, it was really more of a glorified play date than anything.

well, davis and i had a pretty scary situation on our hands this saturday; this poor little guy had his first seizure. so sad. while gid seized in the living room davis locked me in the bathroom so i wouldn't watch (he is a good guy). after it was all over gid of course got treated like royalty with all the blankets he could ask for and when it was bedtime i cuddled with him in the corner-true story. given that it was a saturday night i had to wait until monday morning to call the vet to get him checked out. so yesterday around 3 i dropped off the kid at his grandparents and took the puppies to the vet. gid ended up not entirely being diagnosed, given that it was only one seizure-could be a solo event, could be epilepsy, who knows. he did however have a wicked bad ear infection. despite the sadness of the visit, olive lightened up the mood by trying to escape the room to find the other dogs she knew she smelled (it was pretty adorable).

given that the boy is a bit young for candy this halloween he decided to trick or treat for unicef as to not miss out on the general experience of the evening.
he almost peed himself when the package with the tiny little boxes
came in the mail today
(even if he did he totally wears diapers so it wouldn't have made a difference).

if you are in the idaho falls area henry has 9 extra boxes with your kid's names on them. if you are not in the area and want to be like my handsome son you can visit unicef's website and get some boxes of your own.

the boy and i took a quick 24hr trip to the great town of bozeman, mt yesterday for nat-nat's 1st b-day.

here is nat trying futilely to work a bink (it was pretty adorable).

henry not only has a thing for nat, i believe he has a small crush on aunt chelsy (its ok, they are not really related).

here henry uses his charm to try and get nat's attention.

obviously nat played hard to get the entire evening and henry was a babbling fool.

so, now that henry is 8 months old i decided it was time to use the paint i bought for his room back when he was a fetus and paint his changing table.

it started out a nice white color, but given the shade of the wainscoting in the nursery is white it blended into the walls too much for my liking.

so i painted it a glorious neon greenish-yellow shade.

so, davis and i hit up rexburg the other night and instead of being locked in the kennel gideon decided he wanted to spend the evening outside. fine with me i thought. however, he was apparently a little noisy because this note was on the side door when we got home.

i was feeling a little sassy, so i replied and stuck the note back on the door.

national cream filled doughnut day 2011

so, as many of you well know, yesterday was national cream-filled doughnut day.

although i couldn't very well celebrate with actual cream-filled tasty goodness, i made some, "eh, not too bad vegan versions.

the pictures are terribly out of order, but it is too late at night for me to care.

above is the glaze. i used 1/2C powdered sugar, 1tbs of soy milk and a few drops of neon food coloring.

here is the batter, it is: 1C all purpose flour, 1/2C sugar, 1 1/2 tsp baking powder, 1/4 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp (scant) nutmeg, 1 shake cinnamon. i whisked this all together then added the wet ingredients which were: 1/2C soy milk, 1/2 tsp apple cider vinegar, 1/2 tsp vanilla extract, egg replacer for 1 egg, 4 tbs earth balance. (before you add all the wet stuff you want to heat up the soy milk and earth balance in a sauce pan until the earth balance just melts-takes no time at all and if you burn it or let it boil an orphan will probably die somewhere). then, mix all that junk together and bake at 350 for 12min.

i didn't have a mini doughnut pan so i used a mini muffin pan-hence why my doughnuts look like muffins. the above picture is to illustrate how you need to wait a second for them to cool off or you will get a big pile of not doughnuts and more a pile of crumbs to feed your dog.

this kid slept the whole time. lazy. note i taped socks to his hands cause it was a bad couple of days for the eczema. the hilarity in the picture lies in that he removed the tape and is cuddling it like a well earned prize.

these are the finished product! pretty fancy right. and they seriously didn't taste like poison. fantastic.

how to accidentally make fig cobbler.

in honor of my newly painted front door-color: ripe fig,

(yeah, i did that crap myself) i made me some figgy dessert.

now, as you can tell by the title of this post, i did not intend to make cobbler, but thats what it ended up tasting like so that is what i am going to call it.

firstly you are going to need to grab yourself some figs (i have no idea where to find these bad boys. i don't think i have ever seen them in the store (i got them from my bountiful basket this weekend)). i used five (i cut one up before i thought to myself, "hey self, you are a blogger, take a picture of this so your life appears interesting."-noted).

after dicing those guys up i let them soak in 1/4C water for an hour. whilst that was soaking i made the crusty dough stuff. it included 1/4C sugar, 1/8C butter (i used earth balance), whatever the egg replacer box says for 1/4 of an egg (i'm not walking upstairs to check) or you can just use 1/4 of an egg-whatevs, 1/4t soy milk, 1/8t vanilla, 1/8t salt, 1/4t baking powder, 5/8C of flour (ok, so i cut this recipe in 4ths so that is why there are weird amounts here), and lastly 1/4C of sugar. wait, didn't you say 1/4C sugar already? yes, i did. and that is what changes a recipe for fig newtons into a recipe for cobbler. oops. what are you going to do right?

after you have all the ingredients for the dough in a bowl mix all that together and throw it in the fridge for an hour. during this hour i recommend some bachelor pad. the show is getting juicy. after the hour is over, grease your pan and toss half of the dough mixture on the pan. get out those soaked figs and put those on top of the dough then the rest of the dough mixture on that. you may think these will turn into tasty fig newtons, but you are ever so wrong. bake on 300 for 30min. during this baking time maybe you could put your infant to bed or do some sit-ups because you will be eating 1C of sugar soon. after this was done cooking i scraped it off the pan and into a small dish (if this vegan thing wasn't looming over my head i would have thrown some vanilla ice cream into the mix).

cousin courtney was in town so there was an exciting breakfast at grandma and grandpa davis's house this morning.

i found out how far-reaching my blog gets when i walked into the house and the first thing aunt missy said was, "is there anything vegan here you can eat?"

alas there was: orange juice and a banana.

not a filling breakfast, but i was excited that i made it happen.

sadly a short time into the festivities i had to drive across town to pick up my bountiful basket (basket full of fruits and veggies-google it, its a good program). when i returned i saw this adorable site (refer to above picture). aunt missy and henry gettin' they iPad on. she is probably the best babysitter of all time.

henry sure does love the aunt missy time.

(does anyone else love ern being passed out in the background during family time? he likes to drink before noon).

onto dinner. my dad and i spent about five hours at albertsons trying to find dairy free food. it was awesome. on a sweet note most foods these days have a "contains milk" warning at the end of the ingredient list because of all the allergies and general food sensitivities people have so it actually speeds up the process of trying to find things. amy's organic has some sweet organic products (hence the name) and some of them are dairy-free. granted living in eastern idaho there is not a large variety, but being a new vegan i find being picky means slowly starving to death.

now to the meaning behind the subject title of this blog: my dad saw me taking a picture of my burrito for this post and thought it would be funny to take a picture of what him and davis were going to be eating for dinner-three kinds of beef there and two kinds of cheese, le sigh. (he was right by the way, hilarious). note that he got not one or two, but three types of the best ice cream created by man. so sad.

another day in food...

another day, another blog about what i ate, these are getting enthralling right? lucky you reading this.

made some apple chips. just like the pear chips: sliced thinly, coated in sugar and baked for an hour on each side at 200 degrees.

i did jump way out of the box and sprinkle some cinnamon on them (i know, crazy right?).

i hit up a health food store here in town to pick up some vegan fixin's for national cream-filled doughnut day (its next week people, hop on it) and picked up one of these bad boys. its a tasty cookie from the alternative baking company. they are full on vegan and full on lazy (no cooking). i usually go with the chocolate on chocolate cookie, but i was feeling chocolate chip for some reason. bad idea.

so, i took a huge bite and was appalled when my teeth sank into a macadamia nut. "is this supposed to be in here?" my inner monologue asked me. i read the package, indeed. there is enough crazy in my family, so i have long stayed away from the nuts. however, i did suck it up and finish chewing.

worse idea.

after about 5 minutes i was regretting eating that nut. i was muy sicko in a few minutes. no fun. i will still eat these cookies, but i will read the label a little closer after i get past the vegan label to make sure there is nothing that will try to kill me from the inside out.

now, onto dinner. mama and papa davis asked if we (davis, my father (hes in town cause he likes henry-can you blame him?) and i) wanted to dinner and movie it up. so i threw the kid at his friend elsie's house and we went off to a fun texas roadhouse dinner (yeah, 3rd week in a row-i have a problem). now, you may think going to a place that bases its entire menu on steak would be difficult for a lady on the 21-day kickstart, but i totally made it happen. above is the house salad sans (latin for without) croutons and cheese with oil and vinegar and below is a side of rice (which i had never eaten before and was surprisingly amazing).

sadly i did have to forgo the tasty rolls (loaded with milk and butter). but i have to say this whole endeavor is making me feel healthier and more motivated to do things like bake 800 things per day and paint my front door, yeah, that happened (the door, not the 800 things-i'm not super woman).

a dairy-free jersey shore

in homage to my favorite guidos (and guidettes) i decided to whip up some pumpkin cookies for jersey shore night (the humor here lies in the skin color of those featured on the mtv cult hit-remember: its always funnier if you have to explain it).

these are all the goodies you will need for this recipe.

i literally got it sunday from the girl sitting in front of me in church

(no pen, no paper, just a steal trap).

open the pumpkin puree using a can opener (this recipe is so easy i have to get to my 500-word count somehow right?). then to remove the puree i used a spoon, a fork or knife would work too, but i find the roundness of the spoon to be helpful. then, open the bag of spice cake mix with an extra-sharp knife from the block of the knives on the counter (some people like to use scissors but i find them as constricting as catholic school or underwear that is a size too small). finally add 2C of carob chips. i mixed all this together with a potato masher given i don't have me a kitchen aid-that would probably have been easier, but would it have been as entertaining for henry to watch? i think not.

i like to measure out the scoops of cookie dough with a tablespoon measurer. this is because up until davis i just guessed and burned everything cookie-wise i attempted. true story: i actually like the taste of slightly over-done cookies because i never got the hang of baking until my husband taught me how to

(for real-real).

grease your baking sheet as there is no butter or oil in this recipe and these cookies will hold onto your cookware for dear life if given the chance. i put these about a cookie's width apart but you can put them closer if you would like as they don't really spread out too much when you cook them. (by the way you want to preheat your oven to 325 before all of these steps).

and here is the finished product! they should be a little cakey in texture as you just used cake batter in the dough.

(i believe this is orange fizz by chanel). i decided to brighten up the nails for the last few weeks of summer before it was time for the browns and nudes that await me next month. (also there is also some underlying irony in the fact that i chose orange on jersey shore night...ah, the subconscious mind).

oh yeah, i was pretty excited to figure that out...more about that later.

on to today's tasty recipe.

firstly grab yourself an onion, a red pepper and a clove of fresh garlic.

chop those bad boys up and saute them in some olive oil.

whilst that is going on throw 2 cans of black beans in 3C of water.

the recipe called for dry beans and said to let them cook for like, 3 weeks.

i don't have that kind of time on my hands so i went for the lazy route.

now the next couple of steps the kid was all whiney pants cause he wanted to eat for the billionth time today
(seriously, you people should really think this parenthood thing through before you get knocked up, kids are soooooo needy).

with that in mind there are no pictures given i was all running in and out of the kitchen hoping things wouldn't burn.

so here is what happened (just cause there is no photographic evidence doesn't mean i am a liar): in that pot o' beans i threw in 5 potatoes, 4 stalks of celery, 1 tomato, 2tsp paprika, 1tsp chili powder, 1/4tea cayenne pepper, 1/2tsp oregano, 1tsp thyme and 1 1/2tsp salt.

after the onion/pepper skillet was done being sauteed i tossed that in too.

i let it all bubble on medium heat until the potatoes were stab and eatable (approximately one henry bath & eczema treatment followed by a load of dishes).

this tastiness is what will await you after you are done bathing and powdering your infant.

now on to why i have really not been a vegan like i was telling you.

yeah, i was so focused on looking for milk products in things i totally missed an important word in the name of the bar, "honey."

yeah, honey: the crap that bees regurgitate and people eat.

now, this is really nit-picky of me given that i am not eating the actual animal, but the whole point of this being a vegan thing was to be a vegan, and to me that meant not eating animals or things they make.

i am going to let this one slide out of ignorance and since i confessed it in the blogging world i am pretty sure i am forgiven.

how to be a vegan day 2

firstly lets talk about how cute this kid is!

i mean he was eating a bloomberg magazine.

he is so charming its no wonder why all the lady babies want to touch his diap.

now for the 25 things i made today.

let me just tell you, eating all this healthy crap makes you want to eat all day every day-and i do.

(hence the 3 separate recipes for the day)

above you will see 2 carrots chopped into 3/4" pieces.

i cannot emphasize how important this is.

now, they will get simmered with 2C of water and 1/4 of an onion till softish (20ish min) then thrown in a blender, but again 3/4" or no worky.

(insert rachel's laughter for those that do not know me personally)

now here is 1/2 of a red pepper gettin' itself broiled in the oven.

i can't tell you how long it was in there because davis came home and distracted me and it was the burning smell that made me remember that it was in the oven.

thankfully having the skin burned to a crisp was in the directions

(for real, i no lie).

after taking it out of the oven cover that bad boy with a bowl for 10-15min so it gets all nice and steamy and prepares itself for the nakedness that is in its future.

after the 10-15min remove the burny with a fork.

all this stuff then gets tossed into the blender with 1/2C of soy milk and some balsamic vinegar till it looks like baby food.

after it is all nice and blendy toss in some salt and pepper and call it a day.

twasn't too bad if i do say so.

it was like a high quality warmed gerber taste.

next is the avacado ice cream.

this crap is tasty let me tell you.

1 avocado, 1 banana, 1/2C sugar (yikes!), 1/2C soy milk and 1 tsp vanilla extract.

blender, tupperware, freezer.

its that easy folks.

(note: it may look like pureed dog vomit, but if you close your eyes or make the person trying it close their eyes, it will be a great experience-tastes like bananas mostly).

finally we have some easy peasy lemon squeezy pear chips.

i used the part of the cheese grater that you would use for slices of cheese

(you can slice with a knife, but it is tedious)

make the pear look less like a pear and more like the bodies exhibit then coat both sides with sugar and toss in the oven at 200 degrees for one hour on each side.

after they are done they should be taken off the cookie sheet right away or else you will be prying them off with a knife while sitting on your couch watching hgtv

(this may or may not have happened last week)

store in some tupperware or a zipper bag.

dang i feel like a homemaker this week.

21-day kickstart

some of you or none of you possibly a couple to a few of you may know that before davis came into my life and made me marry him i was a tree-huggin' vegetarian-i also lived with a personal trainer, life was good.

but alas, with great love came great sacrifice, and the sacrifice came in the lives of many a cheeseburger.

i heard about the 21-day vegan kickstart on one of the trashy websites that i frequent, not so trashy after all haters.

so i have decided to attempt to try (yes, thats how i wanted that sentence phrased) to rid myself of meat and dairy for a whole 21 days!

lets see if i can do it.

here are the takings for the day.

i drove myself up to the local fred meyer, which has a fantastic and moderately priced hippie section mind you, and grabbed some healthy and dairy-free options.

now i am not about cooking all day everyday so, in addition to fresh fruit and veg i grabbed some of tasty bites tasty dinners.

they are awesome possum if you are down with the indians (the real ones, not the native americans-not that i have anything against native americans, they are just not indians-some of my best friends are native americans...).

also these bad boys are made for the lazy (points to self).

as you can see by the above picture, they say vegetarian on the front of the box!

fantastic.

but rachel, vegetarian does not mean vegan.

so right favorite reader of mine.

if you flip over the exact same box you can see it is vegan as well.

and free of gluten, msg, preservatives and convenient if i convert to Judaism!

side point: not to be all self deprecating but how did i ever think i would make it as a hand model?

you really need to model with your whole body even if it is only your hands that are being shot (ask tyra).

i also purchased kimchi.

i discovered this circa 1989 from my best friend leslie at the time.

her mom ate this stuff by the barrel (not really,

i don't know that the fermentation process would be successful in a barrel,

but i guess they make wine in barrels,

is the wine fermented ahead of time or does it ferment in the barrel?).

its basically pickled cabbage-sounds good right?

in addition it smells like 5-week old diapers covered in fresh vomit from a girl working her way through medical school.

so tasty.

refrigerate it and pour it over some rice and you have yourself a fantastic south korean meal.

serendipity 3 has this marvelous number and i found a dairy-free recipe online, lets talk about it.

a super tiny pinch of this.

throw it all into a saucepan and ask davis to whisk the lumps out of it cause you don't have the skillz.

once the lumps are mia toss the stuff into an ice cube tray and wait for 2hrs for it to get mostly frozenish.

insert cubes into blender and volia, tasty cruelty free dessert time.
